Best Life Hacks For Busy Moms
Being a mom sometimes means feeling overwhelmed! (Uh, sometimes? Okay, yes, most of the time…) Too many things to do, too many places to be, and too many kids to keep track of (How many do I have again? Where’s your brother?!) Getting everyone up and dressed, feeding them something (mostly) nutritious, cleaning and laundry on repeat. Errands and activities and homework…oh, my!
Mama, I hear you! I’ve been you! I still am you, and trust me…I still don’t have it all figured out.
But there are a few life hacks for busy moms that you can implement TODAY that can help you hack your way through #momlife! Easy, simple, straightforward…almost “duh” things, that you totally would have thought of yourself…if you hadn’t been so busy in the first place! Try just one thing today, and if it makes you breath a little easier, keep doing it.
Simplify Your To-Do List
Yes, I know, you’re cringing already. “Tracey, I have a to-do list. I have a million to-do lists!!” But hear me out. I want you to try and simplify that list. A few essential tasks before bed every night to make your mornings easier; check the weather and pick out everyone’s clothes, give the kitchen counters a quick wipe down, start the dishwasher.
Check your calendar for tomorrow. Make sure you’re not forgetting crazy hair day at school, or the dentist appointment at 3 o’clock. Pick out 3 things you want to accomplish the next day…just 3, no more! Write them down.
At the end of the day tomorrow, write down 3 things you did get accomplished, even if you only half-finished what you had on your to-do list. Planned to vacuum the whole house, but only managed to get to the living room before someone spilled milk in the kitchen? Hey, you vacuumed the living room!! Stop the cycle of guilt over the things you aren’t doing, and start celebrating and acknowledging the things you are!!
There’s an app for that
Writing out your to-do list works for a lot of busy moms, but for some (like me), having everything on your phone, with you at all times, works better. There are tons of apps for that…calendars, to-do lists, habit trackers, productivity apps, etc. A quick google search could result in thousands of options, which isn’t helping your overwhelm.
So start simple…the calendar app that comes with your phone is likely just fine. Put all your appointments, kids activities, schedules and important dates in there. You can usually add reminders too. Add a simple to-do list app (I’m a big fan of both ToDoist and Google Keep) to keep track of things like your grocery list, errands, even that book you heard about.

Plan To Multitask
One of the best life hacks for busy moms is batching tasks. Are there errands you need to run? Can you group them together in one trip? For example, Costco is by my kid’s highschool. If I have to drop him off one day after his dentist appointment, I can hit Costco, Walmart and the grocery store on the way back. Air Cadets is on the other side of town, but after I drop him off there, I can stop at the mall for hand soap (I’m a big fan of Bath and Body Works), make-up at the drug store, and grab a Starbucks before he’s finished. Grouping errands together saves time and traffic!
Even at home, you can multitask. While your kid is taking a bath, clean the bathroom, or fold a load of laundry. Bath time doesn’t have to be lightning fast. Let them play (water is a great de-stress technique for kids) while you check off some other things. (Remember to always stay with small kids in the bathroom, with older kids, have them sing a song while you finally put that folded laundry away…ask them to really belt it out so you can hear them!!!)
Tip: Speaking of laundry…do one load of laundry a day, and wash each kids clothes separately…smaller load, easier to do, never mix up socks or who’s shirt is who’s, especially if they are close in age.
Set a Timer
Set a timer for everything…30 minutes to read a book, exercise, make your lists, houseclean, homework. For kids, set it for 15-20 minutes and make it a game to race against the clock…pick up toys, dance marathon in the living room, quiet time, electronics time while you’re making dinner.
Breaking up your day into 30 minute chunks helps keep you focused, accountable, and productive. If it’s an activity you enjoy, you’re making it a priority. If it’s a mundane chore, you only have to do it until that timer goes off, then switch to a different activity. Try alternating…the chore, then the reward, another chore, another reward! If you really want to see where your time goes, keep track of your 30 minute blocks and see where you’re losing time (hello Facebook, I’m talking to you).
Try to do your tasks as a family…everybody read together, everybody have electronic time together, clean up together, homework together (you can use the time to pay bills, make your grocery list or add to your bucket list). Not only does this get things accomplished, but you’re spending time together!
Coffee Always Cold?
One of the mantras of motherhood…the coffee is always cold. You make it, forget it, find it, put it in the microwave to heat it up, forget it in there. You can never seem to drink a hot coffee!!
Try putting your hot coffee in a travel mug as soon as you make it! Keeps it hot longer, so even if you forget, get distracted, or lose it somewhere in the house, the next sip will still be hot! And bonus, less likely to spill if you knock it over, while you’re cleaning up the spilled milk.
