Easy Holiday Meal Ideas
The holidays are coming! And with that, sometimes the stress of holiday dinners. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, or whatever holidays you observe, are usually all about family and friends getting together to celebrate. But trying to plan what to eat, who is making what, grocery shopping, cooking, and getting the actual dinner on the table can be enough to make you want to skip right to next year! You need easy holiday meal ideas!
Whether you are feeding a crowd, organizing a potluck, separating kids and adult tables, or even if you’re alone for the holidays, here’s some of the best ideas for Easy Holiday Meal ideas from the Little Pockets of Bliss kitchen, our favourites, and great ideas we’ve found on Pinterest. Happy Holidays!
Simple Stress Free Thanksgiving Meal Ideas
Here in Canada, our Thanksgiving is the first weekend on October, so while it’s not as rushed and hectic being closer to Christmas, it can still be super stressful. Check out this article I put together with tips to keep it simple, and some wonderful easy recipes! Lots of these ideas and recipes we just repeat for Christmas, making planning even easier!
Holiday dinners tend to be so rich and heavy, it’s nice to serve a healthy appetizer to start. I love this Christmas Veggie Tray Snowman because it’s easy enough for kids to help, and adds a festive touch! Prep your veggies, watch the video instructions and let the kids put together this dish on their own while you focus on the rest of dinner prep. There’s also a link for their Turkey Veggie Tray for Thanksgiving!
I’m also a big fan of cheeseboards. They are quick and easy to prepare ahead of time, and yet they can look elegant with just a few simple additions like sprigs of rosemary, parsley or even ornaments! Make sure you’ve got a variety of cheeses, meats, crackers, nuts, olives and fruits like grapes or apple slices.
Keep It Light With Salad
Keeping the theme easy, light and healthy, this recipe for Christmas Salad Wreath with Citrus-Champagne Vinaigrette sounds very fancy, but is super simple. There is even tips to save time and prep work! A delicious and pretty salad that can be used for a variety of occasions, and great for potlucks. You can prep ahead of time and assemble right before serving!
It’s Not All About The Turkey
If you know me, you know I’m all about simple and convenient, so my Turkey is always a frozen, stuffed bird that I can cook from frozen (don’t judge). But sometimes variety is important. Some years when everyone has multiple holiday dinners they are attending with extended family, you can really get “turkeyd” out! This recipe for Simple Garlic Rosemary Prime Rib Roast is perfect for switching up the traditional turkey dinner. Try it for Christas Eve, or New Year’s Day dinner!
The eternal crowd pleaser, mashed potatoes are a staple at all our holiday meals. This recipe is my sister’s favourite, because it’s lighter on the fat, can be made ahead of time and kept warm in the instant pot. Perfect for feeding our hungry crowd, who are always looking for seconds!
Easy Holiday Side Dishes
Because we are often travelling to someone’s house for holiday dinners, I am a big fan of recipes that can be made ahead of time. We’re usually too busy greeting everyone at the door, socializing, serving drinks or keeping kids wrangled to worry about making dishes from scratch in an already busy kitchen!
These make-ahead holiday side dishes fit the bill using simple ingredients, traditional favourites (what dinner would be complete without something green bean?), and simple reheat and serve!
Holiday Desserts Made Easy
It feels like cheating, but I have other people make my holiday desserts! No, not store bought, but lovingly made weeks earlier with a cookie exchange! Many groups of friends, neighbours, even co-workers organize a cookie exchange every year. Each person makes an agreed upon amount, then gather together to divide up and share each other’s creations! I’m only responsible for a couple dozen cookies or bars, but I wind up with a variety that I can then serve to my dinner guests.
Try organizing your own cookie exchange this year, using some of these yummy recipes!
Simple Decorating Ideas
If you’re hosting a holiday dinner, it’s easy to get caught up in the menu planning, grocery shopping and cooking. But don’t overlook decorating! These insanely easy Christmas decorating ideas can add that holiday sparkle to your home and table, without a whole lot of fuss (or money!).
