Want something a little different to listen to, besides your favourite music playlist? Got time to kill in the car, waiting for the kids, or even while you make dinner? Podcasts are all the rage these days, but a quick look at the options can leave you really overwhelmed! Where do you start? What are the best podcast picks?
Podcasts are a relatively new-to-me addition to my entertainment line-up. Music, movies, books and magazines have always been staples my whole life. But podcasts are only something I discovered and really got into in the last few years, and I struggled to find the best podcast picks. I first starting listening at home, while housecleaning or making dinner. However, lately with driving and dropping the boys here and there all over the place for their activities (I am squarely in the “chauffeur” era of motherhood…sigh!), podcasts are definitely keeping me company in the car! I love the Bluetooth!
Podcast Apps for Listening
Before I get into the best podcast picks, I should mention my favourite podcast app! I started with the standard podcast app that came with my iPhone. This worked fine, and I really didn’t know any different. However, a few months ago I discovered the Overcast app, and I am IN LOVE!! I can create customized playlists, and speed up or slow down the playback.
Serial and Undisclosed
My first podcast experience definitely spoiled me, and set the bar high for podcasts in general. Serial, an award-winning true crime podcast that became a cultural phenomenon, instantly hooked me, and I found myself immersed in the Season 1 real-life story that is still unfolding today. An offshoot podcast, Undisclosed, delves further into this same story of Adnan Sayed, from a more legal standpoint, analyzing both the Serial podcast and new evidence uncovered. (I’m actually re-listening to these again, as there are new developments in the case!)
Someone Knows Something (SKS)
After Serial and Undisclosed, I was addicted, searching for other similar true crime podcasts to listen to. A Canadian award winner, Someone Knows Something, came up as a suggestion, and I jumped on board during Season 1. Season 2 had me even more intrigued, because it profiled the story of a missing woman from Hamilton, ON, my university town, where I lived a few years before she disappeared.
The Simple Show
Needing a lighter subject matter though, I started looking at other options, which I mostly came to through online bloggers. A long time fan of Tsh Oxenreider of The Art of Simple, I added her podcast The Simple Show and quickly found myself backtracking to listen to all the episodes. I have learned more about personality tests, world travel and minimalism in one place than I thought possible!
The Lazy Genius Podcast
A big fan of The Lazy Genius Collective emails about celebrity crushes, motherhood, and meal prep brought me to the podcast. Kendra Adachi is hilarious in her descriptions, quick witted and just a joy to listen to! She covers no nonsense topics like housecleaning, routines, even how to host a garage sale. But it was her Lazy Summer Summer Strategy series that really hooked me as a fan for good!
(Inspiration for this post about my favourite podcasts came from The Simple Show Episode 113, where Tsh and Kendra waxed on about their favourite podcasts and playlists! I highly recommend if you’re looking for listening ideas!)
The Marie Forleo Podcast is an extension of MarieTV, which I was always a big fan of for inspiration for living the best life. I’m so happy to be able to listen in podcast form when I don’t have time to watch. The episode How To Become a Writer with Cheryl Strayed really made me deep-dive into my own insecurities, and inspired my post Are You What You Want To Be “When You Grow Up”?
The Popcast with Knox and Jamie
The Popcast needs to come with a warning…don’t listen while driving, because you’ll be laughing so hard, you might not be safe behind the wheel!!! With a tag line of “educating you on the things that entertain, but do not matter”, you know it is just for pure entertainment, and boy, do these hosts deliver!!!! Their knowledge of everything pop culture is phenomenal, but their unique spin and commentary is what reels you in and keeps you hooked. I eagerly await every Wednesday, for the laughter that’s so desperately needed in my week! Go, add it to your list today!!!
Bonus for Blogging
Although this one is pretty audience specific, if you’re a fellow blogger, or interested in starting a blog of your own, I have to mention a favourite podcast of mine, Just Keep Blogging by Kim Anderson. I eagerly await every new episode, and have been known to go back and re-listen to older episodes for inspiration. If you’re enjoying Little Pockets of Bliss, you definitely owe some thanks to Kim, her podcast and her coaching and courses offered at KimAndersonConsulting.com! People in blogging circles refer to her at the Blog Whisperer, and I can attest, she truly is!
So that’s it for my suggestion of best podcast picks at the moment. What podcasts do you love listening to? Where do you find yourself listening? In the car, grocery shopping, doing housework? I’d love to know, and I’m always looking for new suggestions! Let me know by leaving a comment below!
